Lamh Dhearg Over 40s Triumph again! - 02/10/11
Following on from last year's victory, our over 40s 7 a side team retained the Brendan Nugent Memorial Trophy at a rain swept St Teresas on Saturday 1st October. A one point victory against a strong Davitts team and a draw against a Cargin/Aldergrove select was enough to secure our spot in the final against our old nemesis St Johns. St Johns were clearly up for revenge for last years defeat and Locky Mc Curdy, Jimmy Wilson, Andy Mc Gowan, Liam Donnelly and co raced into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead early in the first half.
However the boys fought back to 0-3 each at half time and in the 2nd half we played our best football of the tournament winning 1-8 to 0-5. Colm Mc Cabe struck 5 excellent long range frees and Kevin Finnegan delivered the knock out blow with rasping shoot to the top corner of the net. Our squad was Terry Mc Crudden (capt), Steve Mc Fadden, Colm Mc Cabe, Gavin Brown, Eddie Fitzsimons, Micky Boyle, Kevin Finnegan and Pat Mc Cambridge. This team is maturing like a fine wine and has to be our best over 40s team ever ! Thanks also to Ogie Lynch and Frankie Wilson for their moral support!

Cardiac Screening in Casement Park - 02/09/11

South Antrim GAA Committee is hosting ‘Healthy Hearts/Healthy Lives' on Saturday 1st October 2011. Former Armagh footballers John and Tony Mc Entee have set up a company that provides a test which identifies whether a sportsperson is at risk of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD).

The service is aimed towards all sports people – GAA, rugby, soccer, boxing, judo – it doesn’t matter. It is generally for the age groups between 14 and 35 years old. The primary purpose is to identify patients who are at risk of sudden death. For the cost of £35 the examination provided by the Mc Entees can spot irregularities in the heart which can otherwise go undetected.

The website http://www.healthyheartshealthylives.com/ provides more information. If any clubs, schools or individuals require hard copies of the booklet the company can post those on, just give them a postal address.

Any Club, School or individual who would wish to avail of this service must send their details to Michael Herron (secretary.south.antrim@gaa.ie) on or before Friday 17th September. DO NOT SEND MONEY.

U14 Football Blitz - 18/08/11
U14 Football Blitz 13/08/11 U14 Football Blitz 13/08/11 U14 Football Blitz 13/08/11

It was a case of showers and sunshine on Saturday for the young Lamhs on the 13th august who took part in the well run Colin Neighbourhood Annual Football Blitz. The boys certainly came out of the tournament with their heads held high as this proved good fair for their preparations for the championship at the end of the month. Unlucky to be paired with Gort Na Mona in the opening game, a team top of the league above the young Lamhs. They adapted well and on a proper scoring system would have drawn with the Gorts but rules stated on the day that goals and points were both worth 1.

Tactics were reviewed by the mentors which saw Duggys revert to a sweeper keeper role and big Gerard Walker come out to the middle to swallow up all high balls. This worked a treat and saw the Lamhs go undefeated up to the semi-finals, with wins over St Uns, Sarfields and Lagmore Gaels. With Paul Dowling holding  the centre and Darren Fox and Gerard Smyth ably assisted by young Ronan (the bull) Fegan and promising new addition Daniel Lyndsy sweeping behind, the rest of the teams found the Lamhs defence was hard to breach.

Their distribution of the ball was 1st class and Owen McKeown, Chris Watson, Pearse Fegan Graham Fegan and Sean Burns were well fed up front and took some great scores. St Pauls were duly dispatched in the quarterfinal, and in the semi final after a great start which saw the Lamhs go 2 nil up the boys run out of puff and some nifty soccer skills saw the Davitts peg us back and win by 3. Great credit must go out to the boys on the day for their effort, endeavours and skill playing some great football with their one twos and pass & move ethos instilled into them by their coaches. A special word of thanks must go out to Aodh Tumelty for his assistance to the mentors and to Powerwatts who supplied the mentors with coffee and to mums and dads who braved the scattered downpours to cheer these young gaels on. Lamhs abu.

Golf Society - 09/02/11
Kevin Finnegan & Daryl Fegan are starting a Golf Society and running it from the club. The name has yet to be decided on but once we get the numbers of people interested we can decide on that and put together a list of potential outing venues for 2011.

There will be an up front fee of £50 that will go towards subsidising each outing, pay deposits and help out with prizes. The up front fee is also there so that only people who are serious about turning up to outings and getting their money’s worth will sign up. Also note that this is not open to juvenile members.

We are hoping to get names as soon as possible so that we can get up and running by the end of March or the beginning of April. This will allow us to get 6 or 7 outings in our first year (probably 1 outing per month from ear (probably 1 outing per month from March/April until September/October). If there is enough interest during the year, we may even organize one of the big courses down south with an overnight stay.

We have had interest from people within the club (both members and non-members). Ideally we would like to get about 30 people who are serious about it so that there will be at least 20 turn up to outings (having 20 usually gets you the best rates at golf courses).

For those interested, contact

Coach The Parents Workshop A Success - 03/06/11
Recently the club held a Coach the Parents workshop in the clubrooms in our quest to nurture coaches of the future. The popular workshop conducted by Co Development Officers targeted  parents who are keen to get actively involved in helping with coaching our juveniles. The Club were delighted with the positive response from parents and hopefully in the near future these parents will have the confidence and qualities to become involved in our comprehensive juvenile coaching programme.

The following sample of opinions from parents reflects a successful and beneficial exercise and augurs well for the future of the club

"of making friends within the club"
"it is not always easy to become involved" (this applies to all GAA clubs whether urban or rural)
"to give something back to club who have given time and energy to coach our kids"
" to get more involved with this club for me and my family"
"feeling more a part of the club"
"motivated me and gave me a sense of belonging "

To build on the successful workshop the club will organise a Coach the Coach workshop on Thursday 9th June with the intention of the keen parents working with our established underage coaches to integrate them into our juvenile coaching structures and enhance our coach education programme...

Grand Draw Update - 13/4/11
Due to the Easter festivities and numerous holidays around the end of the month our Executive Committee feels it would be more prudent to extend the draw date by 4 weeks to 28th May 2011 on which date we will host a musical and cultural extravaganza in our clubrooms and hold the draw for £100,000 and lots of other exciting prizes.

This will also give us the opportunity introduce a new way of giving more people a chance of winning one of the fabulous grand draw prizes. We have introduced a Syndicate Ticket of 20 lines at £5 per line. If a syndicate ticket wins the prize will be evenly shared among the syndicate group. ie. £100,000 divided by 20 = £5000 share

'Céiliúradh na Gaeilge'- 08/03/11
This week’s events…
This week we continue on with our events for ‘Ceiliúradh na Gaeilge’; kicking off with a talk by Feargal Enright and Ciaran Benstead on Thursday evening (talk will be in English).  At this event we are also taking the opportunity to officially launch ‘Glór an Ghleanna’.  As some of you may know, the Cultural Committee within Lámh Dhearg has formed a new Irish Language organisation called ‘Glór an Ghleanna’ (Voice of the Glen).  Irish language organisations such as these can be found throughout Ireland.  There are five in Belfast alone and we are proud to now be considered the sixth.

Glór an Ghleanna‘Glór an Ghleanna’ was established to help provide club members and people within the local area of the club (Colinglen/ Glen Colin) with an opportunity to experience Irish language and culture; providing an outlet for all ages and abilities within our community.  We aim to achieve this through social, creative and sporting events; just like the events we have organised during ‘Ceiliúradh na Gaeilge’.  The green represents the Mountain and the blue is representative of the Colinglen River flowing through the Glen. We really hope that you can join us at the launch and share in this very special occasion.

Please also note that this Sunday we will hold the ‘Scór workshops’ for any member of the club who is interested in taking part in the Scór competition which encompasses Irish Dancing, Singing, Quizzes and Drama performances (more information below).

  • Launch of Glór an Ghleanna/ Talk – Lámh Dhearg Member’s Room, Thursday 10th March @ 7.45pm (Live music afterwards)
  • Tráth na gCeist -  Lámh Dhearg Member’s Rooms, Friday 11th March @  7.30pm (Live music afterwards)
  • Black Mountain Walk – Meeting point at National Trust Car Park, Saturday 12th March @ 11.00am (refreshments in club afterwards)
  • Scór Workshops – Lámh Dhearg Main Hall, Sunday 13th March @ 1.00pm – 3.00pm

As always, if you need any further information please feel free to contact me on 07725530611

Grand Draw Update - 18/02/11
With 10 weeks to go to someone wins a life changing £100k prize in our Grand Draw, it is a good time to thank the following people who have sold 20 or more tickets...

Joe Finnegan, Peter Ferguson, Frank Fitzsimons Jnr, Brendan Toland, Catherine Linskey, Pat Mc Cambridge, Paul Buchanan, Jim Ferguson Jnr, Sharon Cunningham, Micky Brady, Paddy Cunningham Snr, Jim Agnew,Johnny Mc Quillan,Terry Mc Crudden Snr, Frank Fitzsimons Snr, Gerry Mc Aleer, John Finucane, Irene Philips, Martin Lynch Snr, Janice Cunningham, Maura Tubridy, Pat Mc Cague, Joan Mulholland, Felix Mulligan, Seamy Fitzsimons, Gerard Mc Kenna

These 26 have proved that with the right attitude and perseverance to the cause, large numbers of tickets can be sold. We now need another 26 to follow their example and help create the future we all want for Lamh Dhearg.
Draw Committee

This will allow us to get 6 or 7 outings in our first year (probably 1 outing per month from March/April until September/October).

Your Club Needs You -  10/01/11

A chairde,

As a club we are trying to get acts for as many competitions as possible for the Scór, so far have acts for the Solo Singing and three for the Ballad Group. If anyone is interested in taking part in any of the following competitions could you let Liam Tunney (
liamotonnaigh@hotmail.co.uk) or any other member of the cultural Committee know as soon as possible as the entries have to be in for the 14th of January! Here are the remaining competitions that we could do with volunteers for:

Rince Seit/Set Dancing (4-8 dancers)
Rince Céilí/Céilí Dancing (4-8 dancers)
Nuachleas/Novelty Act (2-8 actors)
Tráth na gCeist/Quiz (1-3 members, one Gaeilgeoir required!)
Ceol Uirlise/Instrumental Group (3-5 musicians)

We could also do with up to 2 more musicians for the Ballad Group if possible.

As well as this there is an Irish language quiz on Thursday 13th January in Randalstown at 8pm. As the senior hurlers/footballer have pre-season our numbers are limited but remember, only one team member has to have Irish to understand and answer the questions, you can think and confer in Ulser Scots if you want!

Any help would be much appreciated as we try to get Scór up and running within the club!

It’s the club’s first appearance in a minor final in 16 years and we last won the title 18 years ago. The club would like to extend good luck wishes to our Minors on Friday Night.Lámh Dhearg abu.

Rave Reviews for hosting championship games -
23/8/10
Selection of reviews posted on county website regards our hosting of championship games at the weekend.

'Impressed Spectator 22 August 2010'
Just want to say a big thank you to Lámh Dhearg GAC after watching the Intermediate Championship game between St. Enda's and Aghagallon there tonight. Credit must go to their club and indeed the volunteers who clearly put a lot of effort in to run the match very smoothly. There were friendly stewards dotted around the Hannahstown grounds, with many helping to guide the spectators, such as myself, into parking spaces as we entered. There was a PA system in use which enabled the national anthem to be played before the game and also announced the fact that there was tea, coffee and other refreshments available at half time. This was particularly welcome as the fans endured some poor weather in the first half. The pitch, which was clearly lined out and flagged along the side and endlines, was immaculate and withstood the heavy rain very well. All of these seemingly small details (which I'm sure took a long time to prepare) really helped to enhance the Championship experience and again I would just like to thank this club for their well-organised, friendly management of this game. Everyone always seems to be quick to criticise and I just think credit should be given where and when it's due. Maith síbh.

'Seán MacOirc 22 August 2010'
Just to concur with 'Impressed Spectator' comments. Lamh Dhearg GAC put on a great show in terms of stewarding, hospitlaity and preparation for the Intermediate Football Championship game between Aghagallon and St. Endas. The referee and officals were also assisted with the provison of linesmen and stewarts also restricted the number of competing club offials, permitted on the sidelines. Well done to Lamh Dhearg and all concerned. Many othe clubs could take a lead from this cohesive and well managed approach in hosting championship games.

'Blue and White 23 August 2010'
Congratulations and thanks are extended to the Committee and members of Lámh Dhearg CLG for hosting the SFC game between St. John's and Ahoghill. The facilities, hospitality and organisation on the day were excellent (You even ordered good weather!) It obviously took a great deal of hard work by the Hannahstown club members. Well done to all involved!

Club host All Saint's from Ballymena

Recently the club hosted a very successful joint coaching and fun day with Ballymena's U8/10 footballers and Under 12 Girls. Both panels were integrated and participated in a circuit of skill drills and a series of mini games. After the coaching, refreshments were served in the clubrooms and both panels, mentors and parent's energetically and enthusiastically danced away as DJ Declan Wilson spun the discs in a very jovial atmosphere.
